Motorcyclist reunited with blood donor who saved life after high-speed crash
A heartfelt reunion took place between a biker and the man who saved her life following a terrfiying 70mph crash. Ruth Cork, a 38-year-old motorcyclist from Shrewsbury, was left with 13 broken bones, as well as severe head and facial injuries, after being thrown over her handlebars in a collision in 2022. Alex Quant-Smith, a 36-year-old blood donor from Spalding in Lincolnshire, donated his blood plasma which ultimately saved Ms. Cork’s life.
Reflecting on the importance of the donation, Ms. Cork expressed her deep gratitude towards Alex, acknowledging his extraordinary act of kindness in saving a life. She described their meeting at the NHS Blood and Transplant Centre in London as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience,” emphasizing the profound impact of his actions.
Ms. Cork’s road to recovery was made possible through a transfusion of red blood cells and blood plasma while en route to the Royal Preston Hospital in an air ambulance, following the harrowing accident on the A65 in Cumbria. Meeting Mr. Quant-Smith in person, Ms. Cork conveyed her immense gratitude, acknowledging his crucial role among the many who contributed to saving her life.
