Unstable Shapes create tension through isolation on debut album

UNSTABLE SHAPES makes waves with their debut album “Delicate Machinery,” a masterpiece that transforms feelings of isolation into a gripping musical experience. Released through Learning Curve Records, this 38-minute record captures personal and societal disconnects in a bold, edgy sound crafted by producer Knol Tate.

The band, originating in Minneapolis, came together following a Massive Attack concert in 2019. Vocalist Andrew Cahak, along with guitarists Mitch Gustafson and Ryan Jaroscak, felt inspired and enlisted bassist Kevin Hurley from the Great Went in early 2020, just before the pandemic hit. Despite the challenges of lockdowns and isolation, the group persisted, ultimately completing their lineup when Cahak invited drummer James Taylor to collaborate on his podcast in spring 2021.

The album’s origins are reflected in its sound – a fusion of post-punk tension and emotional rawness. Featuring angular guitar riffs, precise rhythms, and bursts of noise that are almost sculptural, Delicate Machinery encapsulates themes of disappointment, romance, self-discovery, and self-deception. With tracks oscillating between thunderous and delicate, violent and tender, UNSTABLE SHAPES creates a musical narrative arc that delves deep into doubt, regret, and existential angst.

Looking ahead, the band has exciting plans following the album’s release. Scheduled performances to support Delicate Machinery include a release gig at Zhora Darling in Minneapolis on April 11, with appearances lined up for the upcoming Caterwaul Festival. The cover art, meticulously designed by Cahak, perfectly complements the album’s lyrical themes, depicting figures that appear to be part of their environment yet exist as colored silhouettes that don’t quite belong, symbolizing a sense of detachment from the world.

For fans eager to experience UNSTABLE SHAPES’ raw energy and sonic exploration, Delicate Machinery is available on various streaming platforms and as a limited edition translucent red vinyl, limited to 250 copies. Stay tuned for more electrifying performances and releases from this exciting noise rock post-hardcore outfit as they continue to push boundaries and captivate audiences with their unique sound and powerful storytelling.
