Jesse Colin Young, the lead singer of the band Youngbloods and known for the iconic song “Get Together,” passed away at the age of 83. His wife and manager, Connie Young, shared the news of his death, although the cause was not disclosed. Young’s music was a reflection of the Woodstock era, promoting peace and unity with lyrics like “Smile on your brother/Everybody get together/Try to love one another right now.”

Born Perry Miller in Queens in 1941, Young grew up on Long Island and attended various schools before pursuing a career in music in the early 1960s, dropping out of college along the way. He co-founded Youngbloods with fellow musicians Jerry Corbitt, Lowell “Banana” Levinger, and Joe Bauer, quickly establishing themselves in New York City’s Greenwich Village music scene.

The band gained widespread recognition for their cover of Chet Powers’ “Get Together,” which climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. After the group disbanded in 1972, Young embarked on a solo career, venturing into folk, jazz, and country music that reflected his socially conscious beliefs. He continued to promote his message of love and unity through his music and performances.

Young’s rendition of “Get Together” was featured in a commercial for the National Council of Christians and Jews, garnering even more popularity. He also participated in the “No Nukes” concert series, with a live version of the song recorded at Madison Square Garden in 1979. Known for his songwriting, singing, instrumental skills, and activism, Young left a lasting impact on America’s musical landscape.

The passing of Jesse Colin Young marks the end of an era in rock music, but his legacy lives on through his timeless songs and dedication to spreading messages of unity and social change. His music remains as relevant and impactful today as it was during the countercultural movement of the 1960s. Young will be remembered not only for his musical contributions but also for his unwavering commitment to using his platform to drive positive change in the world.
