Interview with Harry from Split Dogs

The latest album, Here To Destroy, from the band Split Dogs is set to hit the shelves very soon, and it promises a high-octane collection of life-affirming songs that showcase the raw energy of Bristol punk rock n rollers. In anticipation of the album’s release, vocalist Harry sat down with Gavin Brown to delve into the making of Here To Destroy, discussing how the band managed to capture the electrifying essence of their live performances on the record, along with sharing their excitement for the upcoming tour and festival appearances.

When asked about their approach to recording the album, Harry expressed the band’s desire to convey the high energy of their live shows onto the record. Their debut album did not quite encapsulate the true essence of the band’s sound during performances, and they were determined to rectify that with Here To Destroy. With the help of Pete Miles, who advocated recording the album on a 16-track reel-to-reel tape machine, the band was able to achieve a more authentic and unfiltered sound that closely mirrored their live experience.

Despite the pressure that often accompanies following up a successful debut album, Harry shared that the band approached Here To Destroy with confidence and a desire to push their boundaries further. Drawing on their collective experiences and newfound confidence from playing numerous shows, the band aimed to make this album their best yet, a sentiment that was reflected in the album’s title, serving as a bold statement of intent for Split Dogs.

In terms of musical influences, Harry cited bands like Status Quo, AC/DC, and the Cramps as major inspirations for the sound of Here To Destroy. The band aimed to infuse the album with a sense of fun and high energy, characteristics that are synonymous with their live performances, where they truly thrive in front of an audience.

Discussing the band’s new lineup, Harry highlighted the familial bond between the members, particularly noting the long-standing connection between the guitarist and drummer, who have known each other since childhood. This sense of camaraderie and shared history has strengthened the band’s cohesion and contributed to a seamless transition to the new lineup.

One of the standout tracks from the album, ‘And What?’, was accompanied by a music video shot in Weston-super-Mare, which encapsulated the band’s high energy and fun-loving spirit. With a guerrilla approach to both their music and live shows, Split Dogs emphasized the importance of spontaneity and creativity in their creative process, epitomized by their belief in not overthinking things, but simply embracing the moment and having fun.

Looking forward to their debut tour, which coincides with the album release, the band expressed their excitement for the upcoming shows and the opportunity to showcase new material alongside fan favorites. With a meticulously curated setlist that includes tracks from the new album, old favorites, and even a surprise cover, Split Dogs are gearing up to deliver an electrifying live experience that reflects the raw energy and infectious spirit of their music.
