Junior, the Montana folk-rock trio, is making a highly anticipated return with the announcement of their upcoming sophomore album and the release of a new song titled “Cut My Hair.” After experiencing a triumphant battle with cancer, the group is heading back to Oregon in late March to begin recording their new album. To give fans a taste of what’s to come, Junior will be performing in Butte and Missoula, showcasing their latest material.

“Cut My Hair,” described as a demo in an email from the band, reveals the trio’s signature elements of stellar three-part harmonies, emotionally charged lyrics, and creative arrangements. Lead vocalist Hermina Jean, also on guitar and drums, adds a unique perspective to the song, infusing it with a bittersweet quality. The song touches on the idea that making a change, like cutting one’s hair, may not solve all problems but can symbolize progress towards healing. The chorus, “Cut my hair / I want to feel a little different now / cut my hair / doesn’t matter how,” captures this sentiment perfectly.

The musical arrangement of “Cut My Hair” strikes a delicate balance between brightness and melancholy. Jenny Lynn’s viola weaves through the chorus with grace, enhancing the trio’s already impressive vocal harmonies. Guest musician Eric Heywood, known for his work with artists like Son Volt and Ray LaMontagne, contributes psychedelic pedal steel that complements Hermina’s vocals. The overall result is a testament to Junior’s collaborative spirit, heartfelt songwriting, and undeniable talent.

Fans of Junior can catch the trio live in Butte’s Carpenter’s Union Hall on Saturday, March 8, and at Missoula FreeCycles on Sunday, March 9. The performances promise to deliver a glimpse into the new material and showcase the group’s musical evolution. Junior’s ability to blend emotional depth with musical intricacy makes them a compelling act to follow.
