Wednesday 13 Discusses Latest Album, Horror Movies, Firefighting, and Performing at The Machine Shop
few years ago that his fans sent him—so, naturally, he decided he needed to see The Monkey. And—you know how these things go—he just never got around to it. Sorry “Stephen, I’ll get there!”
And how about music? Let’s put aside the horror movies for a second and talk about the upcoming album, Mid-Death Crisis. Wednesday himself describes it as a “more rock n’ roll” record than his previous work. Sure, he’s known for going heavy on the blood and gore, but he swears there are some songs on the new album that could easily be covered by the Ramones.
This new sound is not something he was actively going for but rather a natural progression. He attributes the change in style to his band lineup, some fresh faces that brought this more punk vibe with them.
After gaining the Ramones comparison, I had to ask him if they were a particular influence for the new record. “Absolutely!” he said, citing Johnny Ramone’s distinctive guitar sound as a major inspiration. It’s not something he’s paid much attention to in the past—“I’ve always loved the Ramones, but I never thought we sounded like them”—but he’s seen the comparison in a new light recently.
The Machine Shop Magic
Now, about that stop at The Machine Shop—you might recall I teased that story about a music video and a fire. Well, Wednesday and company were filming a video when one of the props—a flaming barrel wanted to keep on flaming. The crew tried everything to put it out, but nothing worked. Finally, Wednesday grabbed the fire extinguisher and got down to business, successfully putting it out before it could get any worse.
But even a literal fire couldn’t put a damper on the shoot day. “It just went so smooth,” Wednesday told me. “Sometimes these videos can be so stressful, but this was one of those rare occasions where everything just clicked.”
So, the next time the pyrotechnics get out of hand on a Wednesday 13 music video, at least you can rest easy knowing he’s got it under control. And if you want to see the master of horror in action, head out to The Machine Shop on April 26th to see the legend himself in action.
