Peter Gabriel to release new album ‘o/i’ as a follow-up to ‘i/o’
Peter Gabriel recently made an exciting announcement about his forthcoming album, which he revealed will be titled ‘O/i.’ In an interview with MOJO, Gabriel shared that the album name is a reflection of ‘I/O,’ spelled backward. This comes after the success of his current album, ‘I/O,’ which received accolades at the Grammys for Best Immersive Audio Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, and reached the number one spot on the UK charts, marking his first chart-topper since his iconic 1986 album, ‘SO.’
The genesis of ‘I/O’ stretches back to April 1995, with Gabriel’s initial intentions to release it after ‘Up’ by 2000. However, due to various setbacks, the project faced delays and required multiple revisions before coming to fruition. Interestingly, instead of unveiling the entire album at once, Gabriel chose to release singles monthly. By December 1, 2023, fans had access to the complete 12-track album in two versions: the “Bright-Side Mix” and the “Dark-Side Mix.” This marked Gabriel’s first compilation of new songs since ‘Scratch My Back,’ marking a 13-year gap between releases.
Reflecting on his approach to releasing music, Gabriel acknowledged the importance of allowing for periods of absence to prevent oversaturation and maintain audience interest. He emphasized that extended breaks between projects have contributed to his sustained relevance in the industry over time. Gabriel’s strategy moving forward involves aligning his music releases with the phases of the moon. Specifically, he plans to unveil new tracks during full moons and release different mixes during new moons.
As Peter Gabriel fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of ‘O/i,’ his dedication to evolving his sound and engaging with his audience continues to be a driving force in his music career. With a track record of innovative releases and a willingness to push creative boundaries, Gabriel’s upcoming album promises to deliver his signature blend of musical mastery and artistic exploration. Stay tuned for more updates on the release of ‘O/i’ and the creative direction Peter Gabriel will take with this highly anticipated project.
