In this edition of the Friday Five, we showcase music from artists and labels associated with Washtenaw County. From folktronica to indie, this lineup is sure to pique your interest and expand your musical horizons.

Let’s kick things off with Rabbitology’s “Living Ghosts EP.” U-M student Nat Timmerman, under the Rabbitology moniker, gained popularity on social media before signing with Nettwerk Music Group. Instead of heading to a professional studio, Timmerman decided to stick to her roots and record the songs for “Living Ghosts” in her Ann Arbor dorm room. This debut EP showcases her signature style, featuring layered vocals, quirky arrangements, and a mix of acoustic and electronic elements. With extroverted chanty choruses and an intimate vibe, Rabbitology’s folktronica music is both captivating and engrossing.

John Beltran’s “Back to Bahia Vol. 5” offers a different sonic experience. Sometimes, you just want to escape from reality, and Beltran’s disco-house grooves provide the perfect soundtrack for a mental vacation. Tracks like “O Pátio” and “Belle Isle” transport you to a carefree, beachy atmosphere, making it easy to let go and unwind.

For a unique blend of music genres, look no further than KUZbeats. Michael Kuzmanovski’s music blurs the lines between modern movie soundtracks, psych rock, synth-funk, and krautrock. As a drummer, Kuzmanovski’s tunes are grounded in infectious grooves and riffs that will leave you tapping your feet and nodding your head in approval.

Same Eyes is a synth-pop powerhouse, consistently churning out catchy tunes that are impossible to resist. Led by singer Alex Hughes, this Ann Arbor quartet delivers monthly doses of electrifying music that will have you hooked from the first listen. Hughes’ commanding vocals blend seamlessly with the band’s infectious synth-pop sound, creating an irresistible sonic experience.

Finally, Luna Pier’s latest releases showcase a shift in their musical direction. From the post-emo/pop-punk vibes of “On Nails” to the new wave influences in “Captain Nemo,” this Ann Arbor-Detroit quartet is constantly evolving. Their sound, reminiscent of 1990s indie with a touch of Weezer, is a refreshing take on modern rock music that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

With such a diverse range of musical talents coming out of Washtenaw County, there’s never been a better time to explore the local music scene. Whether you’re into folktronica, disco-house, synth-pop, or indie rock, there’s something for everyone in this week’s Friday Five lineup.
