Fontaines DC feature familiar faces in their latest music video – Creative Review
ver take us in the modern world. So we wanted to declare which side we were on – it really is amazing to be young. We are still free, and want to make that feeling spread. We want to protect it for the others around us, and maybe in doing that, can also help protect it for ourselves.”
In this latest music video, Fontaines DC bring back familiar faces and themes from their previous works. The storyline follows two characters who are deeply entwined in an intense romance filled with humor, optimism, and drama. Directed by Luna Carmoon, this video is the final installment in a trilogy that explores the complexities of youth and love through various lenses.
The trilogy began with the music video for Here’s The Thing, which delved into the anxieties of girlhood through the unique perspectives of Irish dancing and classic horror elements. This was followed by In The Modern World, featuring Ewan Mitchell, which showcased angst within the confines of carjitsu, a sport blending martial arts and car interiors. The main characters from these videos reappear in It’s Amazing to be Young, along with other recurring symbols like the characters’ pets and surreal settings.
Carmoon draws inspiration from film history, particularly from Santa Sangre, a psychological horror film from 1989. Through her direction, she aims to challenge the prevailing notions that romantic love is outdated. Instead, she celebrates the idea of two individuals falling in love with themselves and each other. The treatment for the video was developed swiftly, reflecting Carmoon’s desire to showcase a genuine connection between the characters.
According to bassist Conor Deegan III, the song originated after guitarist Carlos O’Connell became a father. The lyrics, “it’s amazing to be young,” echo the profound hope that children bring, especially for young men navigating the complexities of the modern world. The band wanted to convey a sense of optimism in the face of cynicism, highlighting their belief that youth is a precious and liberating state.
The new video serves as a bridge between Fontaines DC’s 2024 album Romance and their upcoming projects. It maintains the design language established in Romance, characterized by vibrant acid green accents. The single release also includes a B-side track, Before You I Just Forget, providing a glimpse into the band’s evolving sound.
With the launch of this new single and video, Fontaines DC embark on a global tour, starting in Japan and concluding in Europe. The continuation of themes, characters, and design elements from their previous work underscores the band’s artistic continuity and growth. As they navigate the music industry with renewed energy and creativity, Fontaines DC remain committed to capturing the essence of youth, love, and self-discovery in their music.
