Ryan Hurd interviewed by Yorkshire Times
s been a while since I last performed in the UK, so I’m thrilled to be back and have the opportunity to share my music and promote my new album. It’s an exciting time for me.
After signing a new record deal in 2024, fans are eagerly awaiting your new album. When can we expect it to be released?
My new album, Midwest Rock and Roll, is set to be released on March 21st. This album is very special to me as it reflects the nostalgic essence of the American Midwest where I was raised. It’s essentially a coming-of-age album that I’m proud of.
What are your hopes and ambitions for this new album?
With this album, I really wanted to establish my musical identity. I took my time with the writing and recording process to ensure that every track truly represents my musical essence. My ambition is for people to connect with the music on a deep level and appreciate the personal stories behind each song. I can’t wait for it to be out in the world.
Let’s talk about your musical taste. Can you share a song that makes you smile?
I’m currently a fan of an artist named Petey, who is currently touring in the UK. His music reminds me of the rock records I grew up listening to, which brings a smile to my face.
Is there a song that makes you cry?
I don’t often have an emotional reaction of crying to music, but there are certain songs or demos that can evoke strong emotions of nostalgia or reflection on past experiences.
How about a song that makes you laugh?
I find comedy in music to be quite refreshing. Artists like Adam Sandler have a way of infusing humor into their music, which I appreciate. Comedy adds another dimension to the music experience.
What song brings back feelings of nostalgia for you?
In my upcoming album, Midwest Rock and Roll, nostalgia plays a significant role. Whether it’s reminiscing about childhood memories by Lake Michigan or reflecting on past experiences in the Midwest, the album captures the essence of nostalgia.
What do you enjoy listening to while dancing in the kitchen?
Lately, I’ve been exploring jazz music for a change of pace. Listening to artists like Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis has been a refreshing experience for me.
Do you have a go-to song to sing in the shower?
I usually find myself practicing and memorizing lyrics to my own songs while in the shower. It’s a good way for me to prepare for upcoming performances.
If there’s one album you’d immediately message a friend about, what would it be?
Post Malone’s album, “F-1 Trillion,” stood out to me for its excellent songwriting and overall fun vibe. It’s an album that really stuck with me.
Reflecting on your past experiences, what was the best gig you’ve attended?
BeyoncĂ© and Jay Z’s concert was a standout moment for me, as well as Elton John’s farewell tour at the Bridgestone Arena.
And the best show you’ve ever performed?
I have a soft spot for hometown shows, particularly in Nashville, as performing in front of friends and family is always a special experience. Additionally, shows in cities like Chicago, West Michigan, and Detroit hold sentimental value for me.
Is there a stage you dream of performing on that you haven’t yet?
A dream of mine is to perform at the Ryman Auditorium. It’s an iconic venue with a rich history, and taking the stage there would be a significant milestone in my career.
Lastly, what is one thing you hope to achieve by the end of the year?
Above all else, I love the process of creating music. Releasing my new album and sharing it with the world is already a significant accomplishment for me. It would be great to see the album succeed and perhaps earn a gold record, but the sheer presence of this album in the world is a reward in itself.
