Peter Gabriel Announces Exclusive Details on Upcoming Album: Title revealed as O/I
In an exclusive conversation with MOJO, Peter Gabriel shared exciting news about his upcoming project following the success of his 2023 album, I/O. Gabriel disclosed that his new album would be titled O/I, explaining that it is simply I/O spelled backward. This revelation was made during a comprehensive interview with MOJO’s Mark Blake as part of a feature cover story on Genesis.
The feature also delves into Genesis’ origins, with Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford meeting at Charterhouse boarding school in Surrey before embarking on tours across the UK in a humble bread van. Eventually, West Londoner Phil Collins joined the band as a drummer, recalling his initial impression of the band’s debut album Trespass as being formless and lacking in conviction.
Collins described the album as having hints of Crosby Stills & Nash harmonies but lacking the genuine intensity required, especially on tracks like The Knife. With Collins’ addition, Genesis flourished into a beloved and unconventional prog rock band, reaching their pinnacle with the release of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, which commemorates its 50th anniversary with a deluxe reissue.
The narrative also touches on the strains within Genesis, especially the deteriorating relationship between Gabriel and Banks, leading to Gabriel’s departure from the band. Collins took over as lead singer, propelling Genesis to even greater commercial success in Gabriel’s absence. Despite missing Genesis’ final performance at London’s O2 Arena in 2022, Gabriel felt it was pivotal for him to witness the end of an era alongside his former bandmates, including Collins, who was replaced by his son Nic due to health issues.
Gabriel’s presence at the show signified closure and a sense of closure, reflecting on his integral role in Genesis’ evolution. Addressing misconceptions about the band’s shift towards commercial success, Gabriel insisted that it was not a deliberate decision but rather a natural progression marked by their growing songwriting prowess.
