Tom Lark, the pseudonym of musician Shannon Fowler, has recently unveiled his latest single, “Rock & Roll Baby,” from his upcoming album, “Moonlight Hotel.” This track delves into the inherent uncertainties that come with a life dedicated to music, serving as a follow-up to his previous release, “Dumb Luck,” which graced listeners’ ears in April 2024 as a delightful precursor to a UK tour.

In a statement regarding the song, Fowler shared, “Rock & Roll Baby is a playful exploration of coming to terms with life’s ups and downs and finding humor in moments of disappointment. I often use the phrase ‘that’s rock & roll for you baby’ as a quirky mantra to navigate through setbacks, emphasizing the importance of finding lightness in the sometimes harsh reality of the music industry.”

Accompanied by a visually captivating music video directed by the talented Sports Team, “Rock & Roll Baby” showcases Fowler embracing and parodying various clichés and conventions prevalent in the artist-industry dynamic. This creative endeavor adds an extra layer of charm to the narrative woven by the song itself.

“Moonlight Hotel,” the upcoming album by Tom Lark, delves into the historical parallels between Fowler’s family’s displacement post the 1929 earthquake in Murchison and his own experiences following the devastating 2011 earthquakes in Ōtautahi. Infused with the whimsical yet grounded essence characteristic of Tom Lark’s persona, “Moonlight Hotel” builds upon the foundations laid by his previous work, “Brave Star,” offering listeners a collection of sun-soaked melodies that celebrate embracing life’s uncertainties and challenges head-on.

Excitingly, alongside the album announcement comes the revelation of Tom Lark’s first live shows in Aotearoa since May 2024, giving fans the opportunity to experience his music in a live setting once again. The tour dates include performances in Tāmaki Makaurau, Pōneke, and Ōtautahi, promising an unforgettable experience for attendees.

With his debut album, “Brave Star,” earning Fowler accolades such as a finalist spot in the 2024 Taite Music Prize and recognition as a top folk artist at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards, Tom Lark has solidified his place in the New Zealand music scene. Known for his introspective songwriting, versatile musical style, and ability to craft captivating narratives through his music, Fowler’s return to the music scene with “Moonlight Hotel” is highly anticipated.

Set for release on April 4, 2025, “Moonlight Hotel” promises to be a sonic journey through themes of displacement, resilience, and the beauty of human connection. Pre-orders for the album are already available, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the evocative storytelling and soulful melodies that define the musical world of Tom Lark.
