Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A. is set for some significant changes as the iconic “It’s A Small World” attraction will receive updated song lyrics in celebration of the resort’s 70th anniversary. According to the Disney Parks blog, a new short film titled “The Last Verse” will be showcased at the Main Street Cinema, focusing on the Sherman Brothers, a musical duo who worked closely with Walt Disney on the timeless song.

The Sherman Brothers, known for their collaboration with Walt Disney on various projects, including the song “It’s A Small World,” will be highlighted in the film. Notably, a new verse penned by Richard M. Sherman, before his passing in 2024, will be officially incorporated into the lyrics of the beloved tune. The additional verse emphasizes themes of unity and love, emphasizing how despite our differences, we are all connected on this small planet.

Debuting at the New York World’s Fair in 1964, “It’s A Small World” quickly became a visitor favorite with its innovative use of animatronics. Following its success, the ride was relocated to Disneyland in 1966, where it has remained a staple attraction ever since. Richard Sherman, along with his brother, Dick Sherman, composed a myriad of well-known songs for Disney films, such as “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “A Spoonful of Sugar” from “Mary Poppins,” as well as “I Wan’na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)” from “The Jungle Book.”

The Sherman Brothers achieved critical acclaim for their work, winning an Academy Award for the song “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from “Mary Poppins” and receiving multiple nominations for their other compositions throughout the 1960s and 1970s. To honor Richard Sherman’s legacy and commemorate the 60th anniversary of “It’s A Small World,” the new verse will be introduced to guests at Disneyland on July 17.

In addition to the updated song lyrics, Disneyland will host several gallery experiences showcasing never-before-seen art and artifacts linked to Walt Disney’s personal life. Among the items on display will be Walt Disney’s rocking chair, lamp, and table from his private apartment, all of which will be available for public viewing at the Opera House on Main Street, U.S.A., further enhancing the celebratory atmosphere of the resort’s 70th anniversary.

Overall, Disneyland’s dedication to preserving the magic and nostalgia of its iconic attractions while introducing new elements reflects the timeless appeal of the “Happiest Place on Earth” to visitors of all ages. The upcoming debut of the new verse for “It’s A Small World” serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Disney’s creative vision and the profound impact of its timeless music on generations of fans around the world.
