London’s music scene has always embraced experimentation, and Scared Little Toaster stands out as a duo that brings a unique raw energy and chaotic vibe to the table. Consisting of bassist Hugh L and drummer Sonny Patten, their upcoming single “Vibra” promises to be an intense and inventive sonic experience. The single, set to release on February 7, 2025, but available one day earlier exclusively on IDIOTEQ, showcases the duo’s unconventional musical style.

Hugh and Sonny’s partnership has roots in their collaboration in various musical projects in London’s live music scene. Starting with an indie/shoegaze band, they later explored the realms of carnival-inspired experimental punk-folk. Through these ventures, they developed a shared musical language that laid the foundation for their current project as Scared Little Toaster. Their aim was clear from the start – to blend noise rock intensity, jazz intricacies, and their love for bands like Lightning Bolt, Don Caballero, Hella, and The Jesus Lizard.

The track “Vibra” is a product of years of evolution, with Hugh mentioning that its bass riff has been in the making for quite some time. The song’s intensity reflects the frustration of enduring London’s notorious traffic jams, a feeling that influences Hugh’s creative process. Layers of fuzz pedals, frenetic drumming, vibrato effects, and feedback come together to create a disorienting yet cathartic soundscape. The addition of quirky, rapid-fire verbal instructions for preparing and eating greens adds a chaotic touch that aligns seamlessly with the band’s unpredictable energy.

The artwork for “Vibra,” crafted by Laurence Montagu and edited by Sebastian Luke-Virgo, captures the track’s sonic mayhem, mirroring the relentless vibrato that defines the music. Scared Little Toaster’s influences span a wide range, from the punishing intensity of Swans to the chaotic charm of Clowncore, drawing inspiration from noise rock, free jazz, and math rock. Their upcoming EP, recorded at General Waste Studio in Kent in early 2024 and produced by Isaac Ashby, promises to be as dynamic and frenetic as their live performances.

Speaking of live shows, Scared Little Toaster excels in delivering captivating experiences on stage. With a recent series of performances in London, the duo showcased their improvisational skills while introducing an actual toaster as a front and center presence. Hugh’s inspiration often comes from his daily commutes across London, where he immerses himself in experimental rock, noise, and free jazz to cope with the gridlock. Venues like Dalston’s Cafe OTO have been a wellspring of inspiration, introducing him to experimental acts that have influenced his approach to music.

Looking ahead, Scared Little Toaster plans to release several singles throughout 2025, leading up to their debut EP later in the year. Drawing inspiration from their daily experiences and the vibrant music scene in London, the duo is committed to creating tracks that are both personal and innovative. As they continue to evolve and explore new sonic territories, audiences can expect a thrilling journey through the duo’s musical landscape at upcoming live shows in London.
