Allison August Ecstatic About Release of Intimate New Album
Allison August comes from a family immersed in music, something that greatly influenced her career path. With a father who is a jazz pianist, and a mother and maternal grandparents who were classical musicians, it’s no surprise that music runs through her veins. Her family’s connections to big names like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Rod Stewart have helped shape her eclectic taste, ranging from Mose Allison to the Beatles.
The release of her latest album, August Moon, has the singer-songwriter thrilled. Featuring 12 tracks, with 11 written by August herself, the album showcases her versatility. From funky tunes like “Afraid of Love” and “Honey Jar” to bluesy tracks like “What Would Mama Say” and “Blues is my Religion,” the album covers a spectrum of genres. Collaborating with blues singer Sugaray Rayford on the spirited duet “I Won’t Say No” adds a playful touch to the collection.
Produced by Tony Braunagel, August Moon represents a significant departure from her previous work, Holy Water, reflecting the tumultuous state of the world today. Through her music, August strives to convey messages of family, kindness, and humanity. She acknowledges the power she holds as an artist to influence and provoke thought among her audience.
When it comes to songwriting, August describes a spontaneous process fueled by inspiration. Her children have learned to recognize the signs of creative fervor in their mother, who often rushes indoors to jot down her thoughts. Collaborating with David J. Carpenter has also been instrumental in sparking new ideas.
Two deeply personal tracks on August Moon, “The Cure” and “Desiree,” stand out for their poignant themes. “The Cure” delves into August’s own battles with breast cancer, as well as the loss of her friend and collaborator, Paul Barrere, to liver cancer. Reflecting on her connection with Barrere, she fondly recalls his unique blend of country and funk in his music, which deeply resonated with her.
The emotional depth of August Moon, coupled with its diverse musical influences, reaffirms August’s commitment to connecting with her listeners on a profound level. Through her songs, she weaves intimate narratives that touch on life’s trials and triumphs, creating a compelling narrative that is sure to resonate with audiences far and wide.
