Longtime television game show host Winston Conrad Martindale, known as Wink Martindale in the entertainment industry, has passed away at the age of 91 in Rancho Mirage. Martindale was a fixture in the television world, hosting popular game shows like “Tic-Tac-Dough,” “High Rollers,” and “Trivial Pursuit” during his illustrious career. A statement from Martindale’s family confirmed his peaceful passing, revealing that he was surrounded by loved ones and his wife of nearly five decades, Sandra Martindale, at the time of his death. Martindale’s journey in the entertainment industry began in Jackson, Tennessee, where he started his career as a disc jockey at the young age of 17 before transitioning to WHBQ in Memphis. Notably, Martindale played a crucial role in music history by facilitating Elvis Presley’s first radio interview after the singer released his debut record, “That’s All Right,” in 1954. In 1959, Martindale relocated to Los Angeles, where he continued to make waves in the radio scene, hosting shows on KHJ, KRLA, and KFWB, in addition to appearances on various other stations.

His television career commenced in Memphis, with roles as the host of “Mars Patrol” and “Teenage Dance Party,” where he had the honor of hosting Presley on the latter show in 1956. Martindale’s breakthrough moment came when he landed the hosting role for NBC’s “What’s This Song?” in 1964, leading to a successful hosting career with over 20 different programs, including hits like “Words and Music,” “Gambit,” “The Last Word,” and “Instant Recall.” Notably, Martindale’s tenure on “Tic-Tac-Dough” spanned about a decade, concluding in 1985.

In addition to his hosting roles, Martindale delved into the production realm, collaborating on shows like “Headline Chasers” with renowned television personality Merv Griffin. Although the show had a brief run, Martindale’s influence was felt far beyond the bounds of the shows he hosted.
