Boston band The Dogmatics from the ’80s are preparing to drop a new album
The Dogmatics has had a tumultuous journey in the Boston rock scene. The band, comprised of lifelong friends from Dorchester, started in 1981 and quickly found their niche in the early-’80s Boston rock venues. With their punky garage-rock sound, they opened for several national and local acts, building a following and gaining radio attention. However, tragedy struck in 1986 when bassist Paul O’Halloran passed away in a motorcycle accident. The remaining members, including Paul’s twin brother, Peter, felt the loss deeply and decided to disband.
Years later, the surviving members regrouped and rekindled their love for music. A new South Shore edition of The Dogmatics emerged, featuring original members alongside replacements for those who could not continue. With new members like James Young, the band found a fresh take on their distinctive garage-rock sound, incorporating mandolin and relishing in their harmonized Everly Brothers-like vocals.
The band’s resurgence was initiated by Lou Mansdorf, the owner of Rum Bar Records, a notable indie label in Boston. Mansdorf’s interest in reviving The Dogmatics led to the band’s 2019 EP “She’s the One,” marking their return to the music scene. Despite pandemic setbacks, the band persevered, releasing subsequent singles and an EP that garnered positive radio reception. A documentary film chronicling their journey, “The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary,” directed by Rudy Cheeks, added to the momentum of their revival, earning accolades at various film festivals.
Excitement surrounds The Dogmatics as they plan a record/documentary release party at The New World Tavern in Plymouth to celebrate their achievements. With a focus on creating new music, the band looks forward to releasing a full album of fresh material in the near future. Their passion for performing has not waned, and they hope to explore new opportunities while balancing their personal lives and responsibilities.
