A historical van with ties to the rock ‘n’ roll world was put on public display outside Easy Street Records in West Seattle on April 12, coinciding with Record Store Day. The significant van, known as “The Melvan,” was previously used by the legendary alternative rock band, Melvins, during their tours. This recent exhibition marks the first time the 1972 Dodge Sportsman Royal Van has been showcased to the public.
The unique van will be up for auction at Julien’s Auctions’ “Music Icons” event at the Hard Rock CafĂ© in New York City on May 30. The van is known for its eye-catching graffiti and artwork, notably featuring a mural of the band Kiss, hand-drawn by the late Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain.
The owner of the van, Ben Berg, shared that Cobain created the mural using Sharpie markers he had shoplifted, showcasing his admiration for the Melvins. The unveiling of this iconic van alongside Record Store Day 2025 emphasizes the essential role independently-owned record stores play within their communities.

The artistic expressions on the van, especially the mural by Cobain, serve as a testament to the creative camaraderie and mutual respect between artists, transcending boundaries and genres.
