Rock band reunites after 24 years, announces upcoming album
Pulp, the iconic British rock band, has made a resounding return with the announcement of their first new album in 24 years. Lead vocalist Jarvis Cocker unveiled the upcoming album, titled “More,” which is set to be released on June 6. The band accompanied this exciting news with the release of the lead single “Spike Island,” accompanied by a music video directed by Cocker himself. Fans of Pulp can look forward to enjoying the new album on all major streaming platforms.
In a recent statement, Cocker reflected on the band’s creative journey, revealing that they began exploring new material during their 2023 reunion tour. A track titled “Hymn of the North” emerged during sound checks and eventually found its way onto their live performances. According to Cocker, this song served as an impetus for the rest of the album, which was predominantly composed during the first half of 2024, with some tracks originating from ideas dating back decades.
“More” represents Pulp’s first full album release since 2001’s “We Love Life.” This groundbreaking band, credited with influencing the Britpop movement in the 1990s with hits like “Common People,” “Disco 2000,” and “Babies,” disbanded in 2001 but briefly reunited from 2011 to 2013, during which they released the single “After You.” However, it wasn’t until their full-scale comeback tour last year that they truly returned to the music scene.
The new album features contributions from Richard Hawley and Jason Buckle, as well as vocal appearances by members of the Eno family, along with string arrangements by Richard Jones and the Elysian Collective. Dedicated to the memory of the late bassist Steve Mackey, who passed away in 2023, “More” is a testament to the band’s enduring legacy and creative spirit.
Recorded over a three-week period in London last November, the album’s swift production underscores the seamless nature in which the songs came together. In an Instagram post, Cocker shared, “When we started touring again in 2023, we practiced a new song called Hymn of the North during soundchecks & eventually played it at the end of our second night at Sheffield Arena.” The album encompasses 11 freshly recorded tracks, including “Spike Island,” “Tina,” “Grown Ups,” and “Hymn of the North.”
Emphasizing the authenticity of the album, Cocker confirmed that no artificial intelligence was involved in its creation, stating, “This is purely us— our best effort. We hope you enjoy it.” Pulp has a series of live shows scheduled in the UK this summer, followed by concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on September 25 and 26, alongside LCD Soundsystem. Tickets are available through various outlets for fans eager to witness Pulp’s triumphant return to the stage.
