Jane Remover gears up for success with new album ‘Revengeseekerz’
In the autumn of the previous year, Jane Remover made their way back to their residence in Chicago after a month-long tour supporting the rapper JPEGMAFIA. Driven by a desire for relaxation and rejuvenation, Remover, who burst into the online sphere four years ago with the release of their EP Teen Week at the tender age of 17 while residing in New Jersey with their parents, embarked on a much-deserved break. A period marked by exceptional productivity followed their introduction into the digital limelight, resulting in an impressive array of musical accomplishments.
In 2021, Remover unveiled their first album, Frailty, a dynamic fusion of glitchy synths and digitally distorted vocals that whisked listeners away on a thrilling sonic expedition. The following year, 2023, saw the release of Census Designated, which stands out as one of the most remarkable albums of the year. Inspired by a challenging road trip through a snowstorm, this album saw a surprising shift towards shoegaze-influenced indie pop that showcased Remover’s emotive, melodic vocals. Additionally, Remover explored various side projects under the monikers Leroy and Venturing, further expanding their artistic footprint.
Despite their initial intentions of taking a pause to recharge, Remover’s plans took an unexpected turn. “I thought, ‘Let me take a break,’ but ended up doing the opposite,” they shared during a Zoom interview from New York, punctuated by a mischievous chuckle. “I decided to create two albums instead.” The first of these albums, Ghostholding, was released in February under the Venturing alias, retaining the avant-rock elements present in Census Designated. The second album, Revengeseekerz, made a surprise debut recently, marking a return to the distinctive style that initially propelled Remover to prominence. With lead single “JRJRJR,” featuring an explosive arrangement of polyrhythmic synths and rebellious verses, Revengeseekerz thrusts listeners into a high-octane musical journey.
In recounting the process of creating the album, Remover described a mystical experience in which the songs flowed effortlessly from their mind onto the recording. “I had complete songs in my head; I could vividly hear the entire composition from beginning to end in perfect clarity,” they shared. This innate clarity and envisioning facilitated a seamless and organic creative process, with each track unfolding as if predetermined. The ethereal quality of their narrative extends to the album’s lyrical content, revealing deeper themes of personal struggle and emotional turmoil. Themes such as pushing oneself to the limit while touring, as depicted in “Fadeoutz,” and introspective explorations of failed relationships, epitomized by “Angels in Camo,” reflect a poignant and introspective side of Remover.
On being asked whether creating the album served as a cathartic release, Remover delved into the complex emotions that fueled their music. “There are moments when I feel angered by everyone – my fans, peers, relationships – where the rage consumes me entirely,” they disclosed. “This album represents a release, a way of channeling and externalizing the bottled-up emotions.” Despite the album’s fiery undertones, Remover’s discerning wit and playful humor shine through, adding depth and nuance to their artistic persona.
Throughout their career trajectory, Remover has navigated a path from exuberant electronic chaos to mature indie rock, crafting a narrative of growth and evolution. Their latest offering, Revengeseekerz, challenges this linear progression, presenting a sophisticated blend of past sonic influences with newfound confidence and mastery. Embracing a sound rooted in emo and hyperpop, Remover stands at the forefront of a burgeoning musical movement, alongside peers and rising stars in the industry. In embracing their sonic roots with a newfound sense of authenticity and self-assurance, Remover continues to captivate audiences with their inventive and audacious musical endeavors.
