Footage from a Palestinian medic showed the tragic events that unfolded when Israeli forces targeted a group of emergency workers in Gaza last month, countering Israel’s claim that the vehicles were not displaying emergency signals. The video captured the Red Crescent and Civil Defence personnel arriving at the scene with their vehicles’ lights flashing while responding to an emergency call. Despite the medics’ non-threatening demeanor, gunfire erupted as they approached an ambulance that had been attacked earlier.

The disturbing footage reveals that the emergency workers were under fire for over five minutes, with intermittent pauses, as they tried to assist the wounded. Tragically, eight Red Crescent personnel, six Civil Defence workers, and a UN employee lost their lives in the onslaught. After the fatal incident, Israeli troops bulldozed the bodies, along with their wrecked vehicles, into a mass grave in Tel al-Sultan, a district in southern Gaza.

The video clip, discovered on the mobile phone of a deceased Red Crescent worker, was shared with the United Nations Security Council as evidence of the violent attack. A survivor, Munzer Abed, confirmed the authenticity of the footage, corroborating the horrific details captured in the video. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society pressured for an independent investigation into the incident due to their lack of trust in the army’s ongoing examinations.

Israeli military officials claimed that they fired upon the vehicles due to their suspicious movements and the absence of headlights or emergency signals. However, the emergency workers’ video testimonies and the corroborating UN footage painted a starkly different picture of the events that transpired that night. The brutality of the attack left the community reeling from the loss of dedicated medical personnel, further deepening the existing tensions between Israeli forces and Palestinian civilians.

The disproportionate targeting of emergency responders in Gaza raised international concerns about the conduct of Israeli military operations. Medical personnel vehemently denied the accusations levied against them, suggesting that these actions undermine their humanitarian efforts amid the ongoing conflict. The lack of accountability and investigation by the Israeli military in such incidents continues to fuel outrage and demands for justice in the region.

As the Palestinian Red Crescent Society mourned the loss of their colleagues and called for a thorough investigation, the harrowing video footage provided indisputable evidence of the heinous attack that claimed the lives of 15 dedicated emergency workers. The unwarranted violence illustrated in the video highlighted the urgent need for accountability and justice to prevent further tragedies and violations of humanitarian principles in conflict zones like Gaza.
