After an absence of 31 years, Washington DC’s ethereal goth/rock band, Strange Boutique, is set to make a comeback with their upcoming album titled “Let the Lonely Heart Sing.” Scheduled for release on June 10, 2025, via The Circle Music and Boutique Things, the band will also be hosting their album release show on July 12 at Black Cat in Washington DC, USA. As a teaser for fans, the band has released a new video-exclusive song titled “Radium Kiss.”

The album cover of “Let the Lonely Heart Sing” prominently features a cicada, chosen with careful consideration as lead vocalist Monica Richards reveals the deeper meaning behind the imagery. The cicada symbolizes resurrection and transformation, reflecting the band’s revival and return to the music scene. Monica explains that the cicada has always been a significant symbol in Washington DC during the summers, particularly when the 17-year cicadas filled the trees with their haunting sounds. This ties in seamlessly with the album’s title, “Let the Lonely Heart Sing,” taken from one of the band’s song lyrics. The symbolism of the cicada perfectly encapsulates the band’s renewed presence and musical journey.

Fans can look forward to pre-ordering “Let the Lonely Heart Sing,” available in various formats including transparent marbled turquoise and black vinyl, splatter purple and black vinyl, Digi CD with booklet, and digital versions. The album showcases Strange Boutique’s distinct sound and style that emerged from Washington, D.C.’s goth and post-punk scene in 1987, captivating audiences until their final performance in November 1993 at the original Black Cat.

Following their dissolution, band members pursued individual musical projects, including Monica Richards co-founding Faith and the Muse, Fred Smith joining Blaxmyth, Steve Willett becoming part of the D.C. guitar ensemble Tone, and Rand Blackwell venturing to North Carolina. The untimely passing of Fred “Freak” Smith in 2017 prompted the remaining members to reunite and pay tribute to his memory. In June 2019, they held a sold-out tribute show at the Black Cat, featuring guitarist Dennis Kane, a protégé of Fred’s. A decade later, in July 2004, Strange Boutique regrouped for a special performance at The Black Cat coinciding with the release of “The Collection: 1988–1994” on Metropolis Records.

The return of Strange Boutique has been met with excitement, as they released new tracks “The Night Birds” and “Jet Stream” from the upcoming album, giving fans a taste of what’s to come. With their unique blend of goth and rock music, Strange Boutique’s revival promises to reignite the passion of old fans and captivate new listeners with their enchanting melodies and evocative lyrics.
