Interview: Jazz musician Steve Allee delves into the Naptown sound
Steve Allee, a prominent figure in the Indianapolis jazz scene, has been a part of the city’s musical history since the 1960s. Recently, he released an album titled “Naptown Sound” as a homage to the rich jazz heritage that Indianapolis holds.
In an upcoming performance at The Jazz Kitchen on April 5, Steve Allee will bring the music of “Naptown Sound” to life. In a conversation with WFYI’s Kyle Long, Allee delved into the essence of the album and the unique musical identity that Indianapolis possesses.
Allee shared his motivations for creating an album that celebrates the Naptown sound, attributing it to the influences of his mentors and teachers from his formative years as a musician. He reminisced about the lush harmonic structure that defined the sound of Indianapolis jazz, inspired by legendary names like Errol Grandy, J.J. Johnson, and Slide Hampton.
The pianist went on to express his belief in the existence of a distinct Naptown sound, drawing parallels with the swing feel exemplified by jazz greats like Wes Montgomery and Melvin Rhyne. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the unique musical voice that Indianapolis has cultivated over the years.
When questioned about his approach to composing for the record, Allee revealed that some of the songs on “Naptown Sound” had been in the works for a while. Tracks like “Hubbub” and “Wes at the Turf” were inspired by iconic venues and musicians that shaped the jazz landscape in Indianapolis. The recording of 16 songs in a span of three days allowed Allee to curate additional material for a future album release.
