The recent Fiction Years II EP by Drunk Uncle offers a refreshing take on emo music by embracing a more upbeat and summery texture. Rather than dwelling on heartbreak, the Austin trio of Peyton, Will, and Jake aim to create music that exudes joy and movement. According to Peyton, they wanted to explore a side of emo that is vibrant without sacrificing its emotional depth, steering clear of irony or parody.

This EP marks a departure from their previous record, O, brittle weather!, as they return to the sound of their initial release, Fiction Years. However, this time around, the band has honed their musical skills, resulting in a more cohesive yet still wild collection of tracks. The evolution from a rough, DIY approach to a more refined sound showcases their growth as musicians while staying true to their spirited roots.

Despite a rocky relationship with emo in the past, Peyton’s perspective shifted after listening to Snowing’s “Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit,” eventually leading to the formation of Drunk Uncle. Collaborating with Will and later recruiting Jake through Craigslist, the band embarked on their musical journey, starting with their first EP, which was recorded in a flurry of caffeine-fueled sessions at Peyton’s house.

Fiction Years II embodies a desire to challenge the norms of emo music by infusing it with unconventional rhythms, colors, and lyrical styles. Avoiding grandiosity, the album opts for a more light-hearted and whimsical approach, incorporating half-jokes, twisted metaphors, and fleeting thoughts that add a playful touch to their music. It’s an album that embraces joy and progression, steering clear of unnecessary heaviness for the sake of artistic integrity.

The band’s unique approach to emo music is also reflected in their choice of album covers, featuring their bandmates’ fathers in nostalgic, rockstar-inspired poses. This unconventional nod to family ties adds a personal touch to their music, creating a shared narrative that is both sincere and unconventional.

Despite the challenging circumstances of starting a band during a pandemic, Drunk Uncle found a supportive community in the Austin music scene, particularly through Tiny Sounds Collective. This DIY label plays a pivotal role in fostering a network of artists and bands, ranging from twinkle to screamo to noise, creating a vibrant and inclusive space for musical exploration and creativity.

With a diverse array of influences ranging from Cap’n Jazz to Animal Collective, Drunk Uncle’s music offers a fresh perspective on the emo genre, infusing it with energy, color, and a sense of playfulness. As they continue to navigate the indie music scene, the band remains committed to pushing the boundaries of emo music while staying true to their distinct sound and spirit.
