The history of Eastland Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina dates back to its grand opening on a hot summer day in 1975. Crowds flocked to the new shopping center, reminiscent of a rock festival, with giveaways, music, and a bustling atmosphere. Over the years, Eastland Mall became a beloved gathering place for families and friends, symbolizing the heart of the east side of Charlotte.

However, as times changed and the mall eventually closed its doors, the community was left with a vacant lot and a sense of loss. City leaders and residents pondered over the future of the site, envisioning a new purpose for the once-thriving space. After 12 years of deliberation, the decision was made to transform the old Eastland Mall site into a 4.5-acre urban park as part of the larger Eastland Yards development project.

The upcoming park, set to break ground this spring, has been carefully designed to reflect the desires of the community. Public feedback was solicited, and the renderings released showcased features such as walking paths, pickleball courts, a splash pad, a dedicated dog area, and even a hammock grove. The park will serve as a place for residents to gather, play, and enjoy the outdoors in a vibrant and inclusive setting.

CharlotteEAST, a nonprofit organization focused on the development of east Charlotte, played a significant role in the park’s design process. By trademarking Eastland’s iconic sun logo and collaborating with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, the organization ensured that the park would meet the community’s needs and desires. The inclusion of an amphitheater, green space, and various amenities aims to provide a much-needed community gathering place for the east side of Charlotte.

The new park pays tribute to the history of Eastland Mall, incorporating elements like a splash pad inspired by the mall’s fountain and its iconic “rising sun” logo. Through thoughtful planning and collaboration, the park is poised to revitalize the area and create a modern community space that honors its past. As construction begins this spring, anticipation and excitement are building among local residents eager to see the transformation of the once-beloved Eastland Mall site into a vibrant and dynamic urban park for the future.
