Will Smith makes reference to slaps in new album, doubts Oscar nomination
Will Smith made headlines when he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony, an incident that is now referenced in his latest album, Based On A True Story. The 56-year-old actor and musician took the stage at the 94th Academy Awards and struck Rock after a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss.
During the same event, Smith received the Oscar for best actor for his portrayal in King Richard, where he played the father and coach of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. In his newest single, Int Barbershop – Day, Smith collaborates with DJ Jazzy Jeff and comedian B Simone, both of whom take turns criticizing Smith for his actions. The lyrics touch upon Smith’s career, family, and the fallout from the Oscar incident, with references to him having to return the award due to his race.
The Academy Awards condemned Smith’s behavior, calling it “unacceptable and harmful,” resulting in a 10-year ban from future ceremonies starting April 8, 2022. The lyrics in the album also mention Smith’s caution to Rock about mentioning his wife in a disrespectful manner.
Another track, You Lookin’ For Me, sees Smith addressing the controversy while reaffirming his place in the music industry with lyrics like “Took a lot, I’m back on top, y’all have to get acclimated.” Despite the incident, Smith remains adamant about his success and resilience in the face of adversity.
With a career spanning numerous blockbuster films like The Men In Black and Bad Boys franchises, as well as acclaimed performances in movies like Ali and The Pursuit Of Happyness, Smith has proven himself as a versatile and talented actor. His musical ventures include his debut solo album, Big Willie Smith, which featured hits like Men In Black. Smith’s latest release, Beautiful Scars, showcases his collaboration with rapper Big Sean, and even includes a re-enactment of The Matrix scene in the accompanying music video.
Having released his last studio album, Lost And Found, in 2005, Based On A True Story marks a significant return to the music scene for Smith. The album dropped on Friday, signaling a new chapter in his musical career. Despite the controversy surrounding the Oscars incident, Smith seems determined to move forward with his artistry and creativity, leaving behind a legacy that extends beyond any single event.
