Legendary ska punk band in the process of creating their first album in nearly three decades
An iconic ska punk band from the 1990s is currently in the process of creating its first new album in close to three decades. Sublime, the iconic band, has returned to the recording studio with Jakob Nowell, the son of the late singer and founding member Bradley Nowell, alongside original bandmates Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, as reported by Rolling Stone. Working on this new project, they are enlisting the help of Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and producer John Feldmann.
Jakob Nowell shared his excitement about collaborating with Barker and Feldmann, describing them as part of the Sublime family due to their in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the band’s music. He expressed a sense of generational significance and emotional depth within the project, emphasizing the familial bond created through their shared passion for the music.
This upcoming album marks a significant milestone for Sublime, as it will be the first collection of new music released since the band’s self-titled album in 1996, which tragically was released shortly after Bradley Nowell’s untimely passing. Jakob revealed that the new album will feature original songs paying tribute to the band’s unique sound while incorporating unfinished ideas and demos from his father.
According to Jakob, this project serves as an epilogue that delves into his personal connection with the impressive body of work left behind by his father, a figure who has influenced countless music lovers and musicians worldwide. While an official release date for the album is yet to be unveiled, anticipation is high among fans eagerly awaiting new music from the beloved band.
In addition to his work with Sublime, Jakob Nowell has been actively involved in the music scene for over a decade, performing with acts like LAW and Jakob’s Castle. Following Bradley Nowell’s passing, Sublime continued to perform as Sublime With Rome until Jakob took the helm as the band’s lead singer after parting ways with frontman Rome Ramirez in 2023.
Sublime has captivated audiences with their eclectic mix of punk, ska, reggae, hip-hop, and alternative rock, delivering hits such as “What I Got,” “Santeria,” “Wrong Way,” “Doin’ Time,” “Badfish,” “Smoke Two Joints,” and “April 29, 1992 (Miami).” Despite facing tragedy with the loss of Bradley Nowell to a heroin overdose in 1996, the band’s legacy has endured through various posthumous releases, including live recordings, rarities, and remixes.
Moreover, fans can look forward to a Sublime biopic currently in development, with “Riverdale” actor KJ Apa set to portray Bradley Nowell on screen. Award-winning filmmaker Justin Chon is slated to write and direct the film for Sony-owned 3000 Pictures, with Gaugh, Wilson, and Troy Nowell, Bradley’s widow, serving as producers. As Sublime embarks on this new chapter with a forthcoming album and a biopic on the horizon, the band’s enduring influence and legacy are poised to captivate a new generation of music enthusiasts.
