Setback for £148m EuroMillions winner’s proposal to construct children’s amusement park
A EuroMillions winner faced disappointment in his endeavor to develop a children’s theme park on his countryside estate. Adrian Bayford, who clinched a £148 million jackpot with his former spouse in 2012, acquired a 17th-century farmstead in 2014. In January, the 54-year-old received approval to convert his upscale residence into a vacation rental. After previously establishing a vineyard spanning the size of six soccer fields, he disclosed his elaborate vision to establish a theme park on 20 acres of his 198-acre Georgian estate, intending to dismantle six farm structures, introduce a 90-slot parking area, and incorporate a maze and a train ride into the layout.
The proposal aimed to lay the groundwork for a premier recreational center that offers a mix of entertainment, fun, and education for visitors. However, the local council ruled against the venture, deeming it overly “urban” for a rural setting. Criticism from BNE Urban Design, relayed by LBC, emphasized the lack of integration with the rustic surroundings. Concerns were raised concerning the visual impact and the need to maintain a significant level of natural softness within the landscape to preserve the rural ambiance. Worries were also expressed about increased traffic congestion, flooding risks, and light pollution from the central barn structure.
Environmental Health officers further cautioned about potential disturbances this development might pose to neighboring residents. Although the particulars of the design were not fully disclosed, they underscored the need for measures to prevent nuisance caused by commercial activities affecting nearby residential establishments. This setback added to a prior disappointment for Bayford when his annual rock festival faced challenges due to management changes. These disruptions led to the relocation of the event and related cancellations, tarnishing the festival’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.
Bayford, who experienced the ups and downs following his monumental win, shifted focus to hosting large-scale events on his estate. Notably, he organized New York-themed soirées promising extravagant experiences complete with entertainment, dining, and dancing for guests willing to part with £110 per head. These endeavors have allowed him to experiment with various ventures, such as selling Christmas trees from his property, opening an Airbnb, and operating a vineyard. His current partner, Tracey, influenced the cultivation of a Champagne vineyard on his Suffolk estate, showcasing a new chapter of entrepreneurial pursuits fueled by his substantial wealth.
Despite setbacks and challenges, Bayford remains resilient in pursuing innovative and profitable ventures, encapsulating a journey marked by highs and lows following his lottery windfall. His ability to adapt, explore new avenues, and leverage his resources demonstrate a transformative journey from postman to multimillionaire entrepreneur, driven by a spirit of creativity, determination, and resilience in the face of adversity.
