Roger Camero talks about The Warriors’ latest album release, their first since 2019, in new Growing Up …
In a recent installment of the Growing Up Punk podcast, Roger Camero, the guitarist and producer of The Warriors, provides an insightful look into the band’s upcoming album, ‘Burn Yourself Alive.’ This album, set for release through Pure Noise Records, serves as The Warriors’ first musical offering since the release of ‘Monomyth’ back in 2019.
The creation of ‘Burn Yourself Alive’ proved to be a significant challenge, marked by personal struggles that various band members encountered during the production process. Camero reflects on the difficulties faced, stating, “We started working on the album in 2022. Essentially, life got very complicated and very difficult around that year…that made the writing process of this record very challenging.”
An interesting aspect of this album is the extensive contributions made by founding members Donny and Danny Phillips. Camero specifically highlights Donny Phillips’ pivotal role in the album’s development: “For this record in particular, both of them (especially Donny) were integral parts of making this record. Donny wrote a huge bulk of the lyrics of the record and wrote the music to a great portion of the record. And Danny certainly added more guitar parts to this record than he has in previous years.”
While ‘Burn Yourself Alive’ could be viewed as a sort of comeback for The Warriors, the band places a higher emphasis on authenticity and vulnerability rather than simply striving for a revival. The podcast episode also briefly touches on the reissue of the band’s earlier release, ‘War Is Hell,’ and features music from various other artists such as New League Record, Tiny Voices, Downward, Killing Daisies, Choke, and Combust, who recently shared their top 5 underrated hardcore bands from New York on IDIOTEQ.
Although the ‘Burn Yourself Alive’ album sets the stage for The Warriors’ musical return after a hiatus, it also stands as a testament to the band’s commitment to producing honest and heartfelt music. With their latest record, The Warriors continue to uphold their reputation for delivering raw and powerful hardcore soundscapes that resonate with fans of the genre.
