Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a groundbreaking artist who gained recognition as a gospel singer and guitarist in the 1930s. Her musical influence extended to iconic performers like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. Following her passing in 1973, Tharpe was posthumously honored with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, presented by Brittany Howard of the Alabama Shakes. Revered as the “first guitar heroine of rock & roll,” Tharpe’s legacy continues to inspire musicians and audiences alike.
During her formative years, Sister Rosetta Tharpe embarked on journeys across the country along the ‘gospel highway,’ enchanting audiences at revivals and tent shows with her incredible talent. With a euphonic soprano voice, a cheerful smile, and a guitar infused with personality, Tharpe’s remarkable dexterity and unwavering rhythm on the strings captivated observers. Known for playing the guitar with charm and spirit, many hailed her as a prodigy, capable of making the instrument ‘sing’ or even ‘converse’ under the sway of the divine.
