Editor’s Comment on Our Coverage of The New Evangelicals
The day that Baptist News Global released a second article outlining claims of abusive conduct by Tim Whitaker of The New Evangelicals, Whitaker reappeared from a week of seclusion with a fresh video upload on social media. The 94-page report from GRACE, which exposed abusive conduct towards staff, along with Whitaker’s efforts to intimidate a BNG writer and other influential figures, did not deter him from returning to normal operations. Despite these serious allegations and the promise by the board of directors to attend to the report and make necessary modifications, Whitaker chose to continue his activities.
Just days following allegations of aggressive driving with a coworker, Tim Whitaker took to social media to share his plans to enhance The New Evangelicals beyond his own content creation. He outlined the significance of showcasing other individuals involved in the organization and providing transparency about board decisions. Whitaker, in his video, emphasized that the seven-member volunteer board, who lead other lives and have careers, are crucial to the organization. He urged online community members to maintain a considerate demeanor in their interactions and acknowledge the dignity of every individual, regardless of varying perspectives.
Shortly after the second article was posted by Rick Pidcock, in which he detailed Whitaker’s objection over the first piece explaining the GRACE report, more drama unfolded. Whitaker’s call to Pidcock in which he claimed factual errors in the initial article was refuted when he failed to identify any inaccuracies. BNG’s commitment to rectifying any misinformation promptly after being notified has not been put to the test as no corrections have been requested or identified within five days of the original publication.
Conversely, someone closely associated with the GRACE report established an anonymous social media account to dispute BNG’s coverage, as per Pidcock’s second revelation. Sarah Whitaker, Tim Whitaker’s wife, came forth as the source behind the anonymous account, adding another layer of complication to the unfolding events within The New Evangelicals.
The New Evangelicals, a nonprofit geared towards restoring a compassionate evangelical tradition for a better future, features an ensemble of directors with diverse backgrounds and experiences. In light of the GRACE report, the board made social media statements emphasizing their inability to regulate all comments but aimed to foster respectful communication within their online community. Members of the board include individuals with various professional backgrounds from different geographical locations, illustrating the organization’s dedication to inclusivity and comprehensive representation.
