Evacuation ordered in Carolinas as New Jersey crews fight wildfire.
A mandatory evacuation was ordered in a North Carolina county recovering from Hurricane Helene due to raging wildfires. Meanwhile, South Carolina’s governor declared a state of emergency as a wildfire spread. At the same time, New Jersey faced its own wildfire battle in the Wharton State Forest.
The North Carolina Department of Public Safety issued a mandatory evacuation for parts of Polk County, warning residents to leave immediately to avoid being trapped or injured. Three active fires were reported in Polk County, with one fire destroying a home and another causing the evacuation of three homes. The North Carolina Forest Service also reported active fires in Burke County and Stokes County.
In South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency as firefighters tackled the Table Rock Fire in Pickens County. The fire, which grew to over 300 acres, had no containment due to its spread outside the original fire area, intertwined with difficult terrain and obstacles. Downed timber from Hurricane Helene further complicated firefighting efforts. Approximately 100 residences were under voluntary evacuation orders.
In North Carolina’s western region, recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene were disrupted by the wildfires. The hurricane had previously caused extensive damage to roads and private infrastructure in the state, affecting thousands of miles of roadways and private properties. The wildfires added to the challenges faced by the region in the aftermath of the hurricane.
Meanwhile, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service battled a wildfire in the Wharton State Forest, which consumed over 2.7 square miles and led to the evacuation of two campgrounds. Although the fire was 50% contained, emergency officials remained vigilant as they monitored the situation. The cause of the fire was under investigation, highlighting the ongoing threat of wildfires in various regions.
As wildfires continue to ravage different parts of North Carolina, South Carolina, and New Jersey, authorities are on high alert to protect lives, properties, and natural habitats. The battle against these fires underscores the importance of preparedness, cooperation, and swift action in combating and preventing wildfires during peak season.
