Periphery and Warframe 1999 collaborate on new guest track, raising questions
Digital Extremes has recently released Warframe 1999: Techrot Encore, featuring a special guest track by the progressive metal band Periphery. The band collaborated with DE on a new track called “Lamenting the Days” which blends seamlessly with the rock vibes found in the Temple and defense missions within the game.
The collaboration between Periphery and Warframe came about organically as members of the band had known the Warframe team for several years. Discussions about working together had been ongoing, leading to the official start of the project in 2024. The track was created over several months, with the bulk of the work being done in just a couple of days at Jake Bowen’s studio in Jersey City.
Although the band has experience with composing for video games in the past, this specific collaboration with Warframe was a unique opportunity for band members Jake Bowen and Mark Holcomb. Bowen expressed that composing for someone else’s project was initially intimidating, but knowing that the Warframe team were fans of Periphery’s music provided a sense of comfort during the process.
When composing for a video game, Periphery had to keep in mind the specific vision of the developer, which differed from their regular album process. The focus was on fitting the music within the theme of Warframe 1999, drawing inspiration from iconic bands of the 1999 era like Stone Temple Pilots and Deftones. Additionally, the band wanted to create a song structure that reflected what an actual band might write, incorporating elements from the game to enhance the overall experience.
Overall, the collaboration between Periphery and Warframe resulted in a new track that adds a unique and immersive layer to the gaming experience. The fusion of progressive metal music with the world of Warframe showcases the creative synergy between artists and game developers, bringing a fresh sound to players and fans alike.
