Residents and visitors in Tewkesbury Borough will soon have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of newly planted community orchards as a result of the Coronation Community Orchard Scheme funded by the UK Government. Volunteers, including individuals of all ages, community groups, and local councils, joined forces to enhance their local parks and green areas. These new orchards are a way to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III and contribute to tree planting initiatives across the borough.

Areas such as Highnam, Longford, Northway, Transition Cleeve, Tewkesbury Nature Reserve, Winchcombe School, Stoke Orchard, Gretton, and Alderton have each planted between 5 and 42 trees, incorporating a variety of fruit trees like apple, pear, greengage, and cherry. Mark Oliver, the Chair of Gretton Village Association, expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the Community Orchard scheme. He highlighted how the tree planting activity brought the community together, and the trees will eventually add interest and habitat to the communal space. These trees, which are local varieties, pay homage to the area’s heritage as a region known for its orchards and will supply fruit for the annual ‘Apple Rock’ festival held in October.

Councillor Cate Cody, the Lead Member for Climate and Ecology at Tewkesbury Borough Council, expressed her joy at witnessing the emergence of these new community orchards throughout the area. She emphasized the positive impact orchards have on communities, bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together. Additionally, orchards play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, creating habitats, and enhancing the natural environment. The council remains dedicated to tree planting, maintaining green spaces, and creating opportunities that promote the health and well-being of residents.

Funding was allocated in 2024 for the establishment or expansion of community orchards in Tewkesbury Borough to mark the coronation of King Charles III and aid local tree planting activities across the region. The Gloucestershire Orchard Trust is providing guidance on orchard maintenance.
