MOONKISSER taps into lockdown creativity with grungy post hardcore heavy rock
Portland’s band Moonkisser is gearing up for the release of their upcoming EP, “Specific Wonderland,” scheduled for April 4, 2025, through Head2Wall Records. This EP, which consists of six songs, is their third one-sided 12″ EP and demonstrates the group’s ability to blend heavy and melodic songwriting seamlessly. During the lockdown period of the pandemic, Moonkisser took advantage of their free time to create and experiment with new music. Guitarist Augustus Bowman mentioned that the track “Swept Away” was born out of extended jam sessions and a novel approach to their music practice. By adjusting their practice setup and focusing on developing new material rather than playing old songs, Moonkisser explored different riffs and musical phrases that led to a more collaborative process. Bowman described this period as a significant breakthrough in their songwriting, allowing them to overcome mental barriers and develop a more refined sound.
The band’s guitarist, Augustus Bowman, considers “Swept Away” a pivotal moment in Moonkisser’s creative journey. He expressed that this track opened up new possibilities and broke the boundaries of conventional songwriting. With the incorporation of an E-bow he had for years, Moonkisser was able to introduce fresh and innovative elements to their music. Vocalist and bassist Mason received particular praise for his performance on “Specific Wonderland,” showcasing a newfound confidence in his singing abilities and adding layered vocals as a stylistic choice rather than a crutch.
