Kam Wentworth’s musical journey began with the illustrious Chicago psych group Medusa. Initially looking to break into the Denver music scene, Wentworth joined forces with longtime Medusa guitarists, Gary and Donna F. Brown, breathing new life into the proto-metal band. The resurgence of interest in doom pioneers like Coven and Pentagram at the time paved the way for Medusa’s revival. Wentworth fondly recollects his time performing with Medusa, including a memorable show in Chicago alongside original singer Peter Basaraba. This experience marked his entry into the music scene through vibrant live performances, showcasing his passion for music.

After Medusa disbanded, Wentworth founded his own group, Love Gang, in 2015 alongside organist Leo Muñoz. Their musical chemistry was evident from the start, leading to the formation of a band built on shared artistic interests. Love Gang’s lineup now includes Leo’s brother, Luigi Muñoz, on bass, and recently enlisted drummer Xavier Cruz. The band’s accomplishments include signing with the European label Heavy Psych Sounds and releasing two albums, including 2023’s “Meanstreak.”

With aspirations of a European tour on the horizon, Love Gang is gearing up for a summer jaunt across the continent but seeks support to realize this dream. The band plans to host a fundraising event at the hi-dive on March 21, featuring local acts Boot Gun and Cryptic Witch, with ticket and merchandise proceeds allocated towards travel expenses. While the band is set to perform at the Heavy Psych Sounds Fest in Switzerland on June 13 and 14, efforts are underway to secure additional tour dates in Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic, among other central European countries.

As Love Gang prepares for their European tour, Kam Wentworth reflects on his musical origins with Medusa and the band’s meteoric rise in the Denver music scene. Despite the band’s ambition to travel across Europe, there are no plans to venture to the mythical lost island of Sarpedon, home to folklore’s infamous Gorgon sisters like Medusa herself. With Love Gang’s modern sound rooted in retro-rock influences, the band continues to captivate audiences worldwide, drawing inspiration from their musical journey and the spirit of retro rock ‘n’ roll.
