Michael Shannon, a Hollywood actor known for his performances in Broadway shows and films, graced the stage of First Avenue to pay tribute to the defunct Georgia quartet R.E.M. Joined by indie-rock veterans like Jason Narducy, Bob Mould’s band member, and Wilco’s John Stirratt, Shannon embarked on a musical journey through 30-plus R.E.M. songs, most of which were deep cuts, B-sides, and pre-fame tracks.

Taking the audience on a nostalgic ride, Shannon navigated through R.E.M.’s extensive discography, showcasing his ability to remember the wordy, poetic, and esoteric lyrics that characterized the band’s sound. Unlike conventional rock classics, R.E.M.’s songs presented a unique challenge due to their intricate and often ambiguous nature, with Michael Stipe’s signature mumbled vocals adding another layer of complexity.

The performance commenced with a full rendition of R.E.M.’s third album, “Fables of the Reconstruction,” commemorating its 40th anniversary in an intimate and evocative atmosphere. Shannon’s vocals, though distinct from Stipe’s, captured the essence of the album’s haunting melodies and reflective lyrics, highlighting tracks like “Green Grow the Rushes” and “Wendell Gee” with finesse. The band, consisting of seasoned musicians, injected their own energy into the rockier tunes, infusing them with a punk spirit that resonated with the crowd.

As the night progressed, Shannon delved into lesser-known R.E.M. gems, surprising even the most die-hard fans with unexpected selections like “New Test Leper” and “1,000,000.” The eclectic setlist also featured cover songs from artists like Wire and Prince, adding a touch of variety to the performance. Amidst the musical tapestry, Shannon’s genuine appreciation for the band’s legacy shone through, reflected in his heartfelt renditions and seamless transitions between songs.

Acknowledging the audience’s enthusiasm, Shannon engaged with Twin Cities comedy luminary Lizz Winstead, expressing regret for not including tracks from R.E.M.’s album “Reckoning” in the setlist. Promising to make amends, the band launched into renditions of “Harborcoat,” “7 Chinese Bros.,” and other classics from the overlooked album, captivating the crowd with their musical prowess and camaraderie.

The evening culminated in a rousing encore featuring R.E.M.’s iconic hit “Radio Free Europe,” a nod to the band’s early success and enduring influence. Steering clear of mainstream favorites like “Losing My Religion,” Shannon and his bandmates opted for a more intimate experience, focusing on deep cuts and fan favorites that showcased R.E.M.’s artistic evolution over the years.

In a poignant gesture to the local audience, Shannon and his ensemble honored Minnesota’s musical legacy by covering Prince’s “Raspberry Beret,” a song intertwined with R.E.M.’s history through a collaborative album with Warren Zevon. The fusion of nostalgia, musical prowess, and genuine appreciation for R.E.M.’s legacy made the night at First Avenue a truly memorable experience, reaffirming the timeless appeal and enduring impact of the beloved Georgia quartet.
