Western Mass Garage Rock Band Faces Challenges with Debut LP
Fugue State, a noisy garage rock band from western Massachusetts, is on the brink of releasing their debut LP, with Philadelphia’s Strange Mono set to put it out. The band, which started as a solo project in 2022 before evolving into a full-fledged outfit, is comprised of guitarist/vocalist Shane Bruno, drummer Jon, and bassist Gage, all hailing from Pittsfield.
The band originates from Pittsfield, MA, a picturesque city situated in The Berkshires, an area known for its vibrant music scene. Despite the city’s efforts to commercialize and gentrify its musical landscape, venues like Belltower Records and Silver Lake Booking continue to support original artists and live music. Although sometimes feeling detached from the larger Pioneer Valley and Hudson Valley music scenes, the band embraces its outsider status, drawing inspiration from diverse musical influences ranging from classic punk bands to Japanese psych and modern releases that have left an impression on them.
Fugue State’s upcoming album, “In the Lurch,” delves into various themes and feelings through a lyrical approach that allows for interpretation. From songs like “I Don’t Wanna be Here” to “Mundane Man,” the album touches on vulnerability, impostor syndrome, and personal struggles. With the backing of Strange Mono, the band is set to release the album in April, continuing their collaboration with the Philadelphia-based record label.
As part of the western Massachusetts music scene, Fugue State recommends local bands like Sky Furrows, Dauber, Bunnies, and others to music enthusiasts. While maintaining full-time jobs, the band plans to tour the northeast, with gigs lined up in cities like Boston, New London, New York, and Philadelphia. Despite their focus on regional performances, Fugue State is open to expanding their horizons if the right opportunity arises, displaying a commitment to their craft and a desire to share their music with a wider audience.
“In the Lurch” promises to be a compelling addition to Fugue State’s discography, showcasing the band’s raw energy, eclectic influences, and a wide range of musical styles. With a mix of personal introspection and sonic experimentation, the album reflects the band’s growth and evolution since their inception, offering listeners a captivating glimpse into the world of this dynamic and ambitious garage rock outfit.
