After the success of his debut solo album, Serpentine Prison, Matt Berninger of The National has returned with a brand-new track, ‘Bonnet of Pins,’ which is slated to be part of his upcoming second solo album, Get Sunk, set for release on May 30 through Book/Concord Records.

‘Bonnet of Pins’ encapsulates the essence of stadium-sized indie rock, featuring energetic drums and vibrant guitars that gradually soar alongside a burst of horns and choral harmonies. Berninger’s signature baritone voice resonates on the chorus as he sings, “She finishes off my drink and/Puts on a bonnet of pins and/Says ‘I thought I’d find you much quicker than this/You must’ve thought I didn’t exist, poor you/I do/We’d better go before your boyfriends cry.'”

Get Sunk is the culmination of Berninger’s creative journey following a period of writer’s block and introspection, tackling questions of self-identity and its societal implications. While not strictly autobiographical, the album weaves narratives probing the complexities of individual and collective identity formation.

The production of Get Sunk was a collaborative effort between Berninger and producer/engineer Sean O’Brien, who also co-wrote several tracks on the project. Joining forces with a diverse array of musicians such as Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Julia Laws (Ronboy), Kyle Resnick (The National, Beirut), and many others, Berninger crafted an intricate musical tapestry that delves into themes of self-discovery and reinvention.

Embarking on a North American tour commencing on May 19 in Seattle and concluding on May 30 in New York City, Berninger will commence his live shows in support of Get Sunk. European and U.K. tour dates are scheduled for August and September, presenting an opportunity for fans across various regions to experience the enchanting allure of Berninger’s latest musical endeavor.
