How music influences memories and stands the test of time
Music holds a significant place in our lives, influencing our emotions, memories, and identities in profound ways. The power of music to alter our moods is evident; a melancholic melody can aid in processing heartbreak, while an upbeat tune can elevate our spirits. Music even serves as a therapeutic outlet, helping alleviate stress and anxiety. Ryan Valdron, a former radio host at Classic Rock 98.1 in London, Ontario, reflects on how music acts as a time-travel device, stating, “I don’t know if time travel exists, but music may be the closest thing we have to that.”
One vivid recollection shared by Valdron involves a nostalgic trip back to 1999 when a broken washing machine led him to a laundromat with his mother, where the song “Get What You Give” by New Radicals on ‘Much Music’ left an indelible mark on him. Music has the power to evoke memories of specific moments in our lives, triggering a flood of emotions associated with those experiences. Whether it’s a chance encounter with a new song on the radio, a loved one introducing us to a fresh album, or a movie soundtrack that resonates deeply, music intertwines itself with our essence during these magical instances.
For Valdron, music has always been an integral part of his existence, with his parents’ passion for punk rock from the 70s and 80s guiding his musical journey. Born into a world of vinyl records and cassette tapes in 1987, Valdron vividly remembers the allure of Green Day’s album “Dookie,” which served as his introduction to rock music. The iconic film “Wayne’s World” further fueled his musical interests by introducing him to legendary tracks like “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, leaving an everlasting imprint on his musical sensibilities.
In his radio career at Classic Rock 98.1, Valdron shared his love for rock music with listeners, co-hosting ‘Classic Rock Morning with Blair & RV’ from 2014 to 2022. Now a father of two young boys, Desmond and Bowie, Valdron revels in passing down his favorite music to the next generation. While his children are more attuned to contemporary artists like Eminem, Juice Wrld, and Nicki Minaj, introduced to them via the popular video game ‘Fortnite,’ Valdron embraces this evolution in music consumption, recognizing the game’s role in shaping their musical preferences.
Music transcends mere auditory stimulation; it serves as a thread connecting us to our past, shaping our emotional landscape, and influencing future generations. Whether evoking nostalgic childhood memories, sparking newfound admiration for an artist, or exposing younger audiences to classic hits through innovative mediums like video games, music remains an enduring and timeless component of our being. As Valdron aptly puts it, “Music is a powerful force that connects us to our past, shapes our emotions, and influences the next generation.”
