Grand Rapids Band Promotes ‘To The Horizon’ with Ten Peso Version
The narrative behind the name of the local indie rock trio known as Ten Peso Version holds sentimental value for the band members and reflects the camaraderie they bring to their music. Inspired by a line from the 1986 film “Three Amigos,” the name signifies the band’s playful and friendly approach to creating songs, music videos, and stage performances, which has contributed to their rapid ascent in the music scene of West Michigan.
Lead vocalist and guitarist, Ruben Resendiz Jr., recounts the origin of the band’s name, drawing from a scene in the movie where characters are trying to send a telegram. The phrase “ten peso version” stuck with Resendiz due to its comedic appeal and his personal connection to the film from his childhood. With drummer Tom Nissen by his side, Resendiz initiated the journey that culminated in the formation of Ten Peso Version in late 2021. Bassist Collin Jones completed the trio after expressing his interest in joining the band following their second performance at Tip Top in February 2022.
The members of Ten Peso Version have diverse musical backgrounds that converge to create their unique sound. Nissen, a drummer who initially honed his skills playing the trombone in school bands, brings a fresh perspective to the rock genre. Resendiz, who started playing guitar at a young age and furthered his musical education at Grand Rapids Community College, merges his classic rock influences with funk and jam band elements. Jones, with his extensive experience as a bass player and exposure to post-rock, adds depth to the band’s musical repertoire.
The band’s creative process involves collaboration and experimentation, as evidenced by their debut EP, “Forward,” and the subsequent live recording at Dogtown Studio. Their upcoming release, “To The Horizon,” set to launch in March 2025, signifies a significant milestone for the band. Recorded at River City Studios with the guidance of engineer Ryan Roullard, the EP showcases the evolution of the band’s sound and their commitment to pushing creative boundaries.
In addition to their musical pursuits, Ten Peso Version has embraced visual storytelling through music videos, with the recent release of “It Doesn’t Matter” showcasing their comedic flair and local landmarks. The band’s dedication to engaging their audience extends to their live performances, where they plan to unveil new merchandise alongside their EP release at The Pyramid Scheme in March, with a promise of raffle prizes for attendees.
As they look towards the future, Ten Peso Version remains focused on expanding their reach and solidifying their presence in the music scene. With a blend of passion, talent, and camaraderie, the band is poised to captivate audiences and establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
