Guster, the East Coast indie rock group, delighted fans during their recent visit to Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines as part of their unique “We Also Have Eras” tour. Cece Mitchell from IPR caught up with the band to chat about their unconventional performances, side projects, and standout musical memories.

Like many bands, Guster’s origins trace back to a college dorm room, specifically at Tufts University in 1991. After spending the majority of the ’90s in the indie scene, their 1999 hit “Fa Fa” propelled them into mainstream success. Subsequent albums like 2003’s Keep It Together, featuring tracks like “Careful” and “Amsterdam,” and 2006’s Ganging Up on the Sun, which included the gold-selling “Satellite,” further solidified their place in the music world.

Despite their peak in the 2000s, Guster has continued to captivate audiences with their innovative music and extensive tours. Their 2024 studio album Ooh La La, showcasing singles like “When We Were Stars,” proves that the band’s creativity shows no signs of slowing down.

Wrapping up the latest leg of their “We Also Have Eras” tour, Guster showcases their musical evolution over the past three decades. These shows are not your run-of-the-mill concerts; they incorporate skits, choreography, set design, and, of course, their signature sound. The band, consisting of Adam Gardner, Ryan Miller, Brian Rosenworcel, Luke Reynolds, and honorary member David Butler, craft a narrative that comes to life through their performances, creating a unique and memorable experience for audiences.

Reflecting on their discography and journey, Guster continues to push boundaries and surprise fans with their musical prowess. The band’s “Eras Tour” serves as a poignant celebration of their growth and evolution in the music industry, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of their career.

As fans eagerly anticipate what Guster has in store next, their latest tour and new music demonstrate that this East Coast staple is as vibrant and dynamic as ever. With each performance, the band reaffirms their status as indie icons, leaving a lasting impact on listeners who continue to be drawn to their distinct sound and innovative approach to music.
