Jimmy Barnes reveals struggles with writing new album Defiant

Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes has recently shared that he faced challenges of being “incapacitated” while creating tracks for his upcoming album. Barnes, aged 68, has endured a turbulent period of health issues over the past few years, marked by numerous surgeries and hospital visits after a career spanning more than five decades.

One of his most recent setbacks involved undergoing open-heart surgery followed by emergency hip surgery due to a recurring infection. Despite the excruciating pain, Barnes managed to return to performing seven weeks after receiving a temporary joint. He underwent another surgery recently to replace his hip joint permanently, but he remains resilient, describing himself as “fighting fit.”

His new album, aptly titled Defiant, is set to be released this year, with the lead single “New Day” already out. Barnes candidly acknowledges the impact of his health struggles on his creative process, revealing that he often wrote lyrics from a hospital bed during his recovery.

In a recent interview, Barnes reflected on how his health challenges shaped his personal resilience, making him a “very defiant person.” He emphasized the importance of facing life’s obstacles with persistence, self-reflection, and a determination to move forward. Rejecting defeat, he views defiance as essential in all aspects of life, whether in relationships, personal growth, or parenthood.

Looking ahead, Barnes eagerly anticipates hitting the road for a national tour in June to bring his new music to live audiences. Notably, Barnes’s live performances are evolving into a family affair, with his children Mahaila and Jackie actively involved in the album and set to join him on tour.
