Review of Gaytheist’s album “The Mustache Stays” – Joyzine
THE MUSTACHE STAYS album by Gaytheist is a phenomenal and powerful auditory experience right from the first track. The combination of Jason Rivera’s gritty guitar tone, reminiscent of classic stoner rock, and Tim Hoff’s edgy distorted bass creates a sound that is both defined and forceful. Nick Park’s high-energy drum fills permeate the music, going beyond just keeping time to truly enhance the musicality of the songs and inject a massive amount of energy. Rivera’s vocals soar above the instrumental layers throughout the album, adding a melodic counterpoint to his guitar work.
The album is produced and mixed in a bold and loud style, yet everything is expertly balanced and spread across the stereo spectrum in an engaging and dynamic way, simulating the atmosphere of an exceptionally mixed live performance. The palpable energy that emanates from the music is truly captivating. While the musicians showcase their skills, the band’s tough and direct punk attitude prevents any hint of self-indulgence. The songs are brief and intense, mostly clocking in at around 2 minutes, with the standout track “Silverfuck” lasting a substantial 7 minutes and 45 seconds. Another highlight is the album’s opening track, “Shelved,” where Rivera’s vocals bring to mind the sweeping lines of Maynard James Keenan over the dense instrumental backdrop.
For those seeking a dose of upfront riffs and enjoyment, this album comes highly recommended. I am personally grateful that “The Mustache Stays” and hope it remains intact.
