Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV series will debut in Japan this April, following the release of the film edit, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, in North American theaters this week.

The official Gundam website recently announced that the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV anime series will premiere on the Nippon Television Network starting April 8th. The series, jointly produced by Sunrise and Studio Khara, is set in an alternate timeline from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.

The story centers around high school student Amate Yuzuriha, living peacefully in a space colony until she encounters a war refugee named Nyaan. Together, they become involved in the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle. Under the alias “Machu,” Amate pilots the GQuuuuuuX in intense battles, which leads her to encounter an unidentified Gundam mobile suit, along with its pilot, a boy named Shuji.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- is a re-edit of upcoming series episodes, released in Japanese theaters in January and proven to be a commercial success. The film earned 2.5 billion yen (US$16.71 million) and is now the second highest-grossing theatrical release in Gundam franchise history. North American audiences can catch the film this week, thanks to film distributor GKIDS.

Directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, with a screenplay co-written by Yoji Enokido and Hideaki Anno, the film showcases a collaboration between Studio Khara and Sunrise, known for their previous works on the Evangelion series and the original Gundam series, respectively. With Take as the character designer and Ikuto Yamashita as the mechanical designer, the film marks a significant milestone in the two studios’ partnership.

Audiences have access to special content added after the main screening of the film this week, hinting at what’s to come in the storyline. While Japanese screenings include this additional footage, its inclusion in North American showings remains unconfirmed as of now.

Overall, fans of the Gundam series can look forward to a dynamic blend of action, drama, and futuristic themes in both the upcoming TV series and the already successful Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- film. The collaboration between Sunrise and Studio Khara promises an exciting narrative that will captivate audiences both in Japan and internationally.
