Grill explosion in West Maui captured on video
A new video has emerged capturing the moments leading up to and following an outdoor grill explosion at a resort in West Maui. The incident resulted in injuries to at least nine individuals. The explosion occurred on a Thursday evening around 6:15 p.m. near the pool at The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach.
Condo property owner Cindy Johnson described the event as resembling an explosion, prompting residents from both towers to rush to the scene, initially mistaking it for a bomb detonation. As emergency personnel arrived, it became evident that a tragic incident had unfolded at the barbecue area.
Maui Memorial Medical Center later reported treating nine patients, with two requiring transfer to Oahu for specialized care. Three individuals remain in stable condition at the hospital, while four have since been discharged. While investigations are ongoing to determine the precise cause, preliminary findings suggest the involvement of liquefied petroleum gas, a common component in barbecue setups.
Eyewitnesses recounted a possible malfunction in the grill just before the explosion occurred. One individual, Debby Wreath, reflected on previous visits to the grill area, where she had heard unusual noises that raised concerns about gas-related issues. She described the explosion as the most significant she had ever heard.
The aftermath of the explosion left the affected area heavily damaged, with debris strewn across the beachfront location. With the resort situated close to Whalers Village, a bustling retail hub and Black Rock beach, the incident drew attention from visitors and locals alike.
Owners of condominium units at the resort organized a prayer gathering involving approximately 100 attendees the morning after the explosion. Johnson expressed deep sadness over the unforeseen turn of events, emphasizing the shock and disbelief shared by numerous individuals affected by the incident.
In response to the incident, the general manager of The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach issued a statement expressing regret over the explosion and acknowledging the injuries sustained by seven individuals, as confirmed by Maui Police Department. The property management team underscored a commitment to assisting affected families, guests, and staff, as well as collaborating with authorities to ascertain the cause of the explosion and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Safety protocols and adherence to stringent standards were highlighted in the statement, with a firm commitment to prioritizing the well-being of all individuals associated with the property. Condolences were extended to those affected by the incident, with reassurances of ongoing collaboration with investigative authorities to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
