Split Decision, a group of talented University students and a recent graduate, have come together to release their first album titled “Easy Does It.” This debut album consists of nine tracks lasting a total of 33 minutes, offering listeners a taste of the vibrant indie rock scene commonly associated with college bands. While embodying the essence of college rock, the band infuses their unique flair through intricate solos and the enriching sounds of the saxophone. Their music blends seamlessly with expressive lyrics that delve into the dynamics of stormy relationships, portraying a detached persona that strives to focus on life’s simple pleasures.

The band’s journey began when six University students and one recent graduate, initially connected through their shared membership in the Chi Phi fraternity, decided to come together to create music. Their musical collaboration commenced in the spring of 2022, and over time, the band has evolved through different lineups as members graduated and new members joined the group.

The album “Easy Does It” was mainly recorded in Charlottesville, primarily at band members’ homes and the University Rap Lab, with the exception of the drum recordings that took place in Richmond. Kicking off the album is the track “Waiting for the Weekend,” which humorously introduces Joe Leonard, a fourth-year Engineering student and the band’s lead vocalist, playfully stating, “check, check, check … I’m not done yet.” This opening track sets the tone with its infectious melody and familiar chord progressions and rhythms, evoking the spirit of songs like “Looking Out for You” by Joy Again.

Saxophonist and Class of 2024 alumnus Travon Cervantes mentioned that “Waiting for the Weekend” stands out as the only song on the album crafted collaboratively by the band members. In contrast, the other tracks were created in a piecemeal fashion, with each member contributing individually to the instrumentals and lyrics. Despite this fragmented approach, the band succeeded in creating a cohesive and compelling album.

As the album progresses, tracks like “The Weight” delve into the complexities of strained relationships, capturing the emotional turmoil and conflicting desires present in failing love. Leonard’s distinctive vocals intertwine with the emotive instrumentals, creating a poignant narrative that resonates with listeners. The album seamlessly transitions to “Hangin’ Around,” the band’s debut single, exuding a lighthearted essence that invites listeners to bask in carefree vibes and sing along to the catchy tunes.

While “Easy Does It” showcases the band’s musical prowess and creativity, some tracks may fall short in terms of lyrical depth and mixing quality. Nevertheless, standout elements like Farmer’s captivating guitar solos and the incorporation of a saxophone solo in “Westside” demonstrate the band’s musical ingenuity and potential. With tracks like “Renate” and “Going Through the Motions,” the band explores different musical textures and styles, showcasing their versatility and artistic growth.

In conclusion, Split Decision’s debut album “Easy Does It” serves as a testament to the band’s collective talent and dedication. Their distinctive sound and heartfelt lyrics offer listeners a captivating musical journey, setting the stage for their future endeavors in the music industry.
