Popular independent band from Stirling to perform in city this month
Emerging as a successful indie band in the noughties, The Shermans from Stirling are making a grand return to their hometown with a gig scheduled for later this month. After a lengthy hiatus, the band is geared up to perform at The Fubar on February 28, following their sold-out shows at McQ’s in Bannockburn last year and a recent release of new material.
Originally formed in 2005 by former students of Denny, Wallace, and Dunblane High, The Shermans found their name from a colleague at a Bridge of Allan supermarket where they all worked. Their breakthrough single, “Calling It Wrong,” released in 2007, reached the 20th spot on the UK Indie Chart and the 23rd position on the Scottish Chart. This track became a staple on Sky TV football highlight shows, garnering significant attention. Their follow-up single “Venom” achieved even greater success by hitting the 10th spot on the UK Indie charts and the 7th place on the Scottish charts amidst a lineup that included Calvin Harris, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga.
During their earlier years, The Shermans toured extensively across England and performed at renowned Scottish venues like Glasgow Barrowlands, the 02 Academy, King Tut’s, and the Live at Loch Lomond music festival. Lead singer and songwriter, Shaun Aitchison, expressed his excitement for the upcoming gig in Stirling, noting the special significance of The Fubar to the band.
Following their recent performance at McQ’s, The Shermans went on to create new music, with the release of their first single in 15 years titled “Shilouette.” This was just the beginning, as the band also recorded four additional songs at Falkirk’s Waterfront Studios, set for release later this year. The current lineup of The Shermans includes Shaun Aitchison on vocals and songwriting, Chris Kerr on lead guitar, David Cumming on drums, Kenny McDonald on bass, and Nick Cheetham on rhythm guitar. While original lead guitarist Graeme Middleton departed in 2011, Nick stepped in to maintain a solid lineup.
Reflecting on the band’s roots, Shaun reminisced about their humble beginnings at the Bridge of Allan supermarket, where the band members came together for fun and love for music. Their journey from novice musicians to renowned indie stars speaks volumes about their passion and dedication to their craft.
As The Shermans gear up for an electrifying performance at The Fubar, they are prepared to captivate audiences with their signature sound and energetic stage presence. Fans can expect a night filled with nostalgia, new releases, and the promise of more exciting music in the future.
