Mitch Ryder delves into new album ‘With Love’ in exclusive interview
Detroit rock legend, Mitch Ryder, is currently navigating a slew of endeavors and projects, which he is delighted about. While Ryder is renowned for his series of classic rock songs with the Detroit Wheels in the mid-1960s, like “Devil With a Blue Dress On,” “Jenny Take a Ride!,” and “Little Latin Lupe Lu,” he is as occupied as ever in his career as an artist – even as he approaches his 80th birthday on February 26. His upcoming album, “With Love,” scheduled for release on February 21, is a highly anticipated body of work.
Despite the occasional consideration of mortality, Ryder remains optimistic about his future works after “With Love.” He ambitiously mentions a stage musical that has been in development for a decade, hinting at potentially bringing it to life. Ryder, a Detroit native living in Saline, expresses, “I’ve got plenty to keep me busy, that’s for sure. I haven’t lost anything — my desire, my ambition. None of that’s gone.” Despite his physical limitations, Ryder remains resolute in pushing forward.
Mitch Ryder has had an illustrious career, and his contributions to rock music have solidified his place as a rock influencer. From his early days as part of Billy Lee & the Rivieras which later transformed into the Detroit Wheels, Ryder’s influence is widespread. He credits his parents for introducing him to music and shaping his diverse musical taste. His influences range from Little Richard to Hank Williams, which undoubtedly contributed to the unique sound he cultivated.
“When I say music, I mean all music,” Ryder explains. His forays into rock and R&B culminated in a successful signing with DynoVoice Records and the subsequent rise of the Detroit Wheels. This era saw the creation of hits that legendary artists such as Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp have acknowledged as significant influences. The undeniably talented Don Was, known for producing “With Love,” speaks highly of Ryder’s songwriting and unique approach to music.
“With Love” offers a sincere look at Ryder’s introspections about love, mortality, and his storied career. Through tracks like “Fly” and “One Monkey,” Ryder delves into personal experiences, addressing substance addiction, reflecting on his life’s work, and coping with the inevitability of mortality. The album, recorded at Rust Belt Studios, boasts an intimate ambiance with contributions from seasoned musicians like Luis Resto and Dave McMurray.
For Mitch Ryder, “With Love” is not just a collection of songs but a reflection of his life’s journey. As he candidly puts it, “What’s the point of fictionalizing anything at this stage in my life?” The album encapsulates his reality, offering a glimpse into his worldview with profound reflections on life, substance abuse, and mortality. Ryder’s artistic vision and introspective songwriting shine through in this new musical offering, providing listeners with a poignant and heartfelt musical experience.
