Savatage Guitarist Addresses Fans’ Concerns About Comeback Without Jon Oliva
In a recent conversation with Barbara Caserta from Italy’s Linea Rock, Savatage’s Al Pitrelli tackled the criticism the band faced over the reunion that took place without Jon Oliva. “There’s people who are gonna complain and I understand their complaint — I get it,” said the guitarist. He elaborated, stating, “The two original members, Jon and Criss [Oliva, late Savatage guitarist] — well, Jon is not healthy enough to do this this year.” Pitrelli expressed a strong desire to have Jon Oliva back and emphasized the importance of having him when he is in great condition to deliver an outstanding performance. He pointed out sadly, “Criss Oliva passed away 35 years ago. And I have no control over that.”
Addressing fans who enjoyed previous tours like ‘Dead Winter Dead’ and ‘The Wake Of Magellan,’ Pitrelli urged them to witness the current lineup themselves before making judgments. He encouraged fans not to give in to disappointment and to reserve judgment until they experience the live performance. He even humorously added, “Don’t live in disappointment now. Come out and see it, and if you hate it, then I’ll buy the ticket back from you.”
In 2023, Jon Oliva faced a major setback due to a severe injury to his T7 vertebra, combined with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and Ménière’s disease. This has significantly impacted his health and ability to perform. The current Savatage lineup comprises Johnny Lee Middleton on bass, Chris Caffery on guitar, Jeff Plate on drums, and Zak Stevens on vocals.
Savatage is scheduled to make a dramatic return after almost a decade with their first show slated for the Monsters of Rock festival in São Paulo, Brazil, on April 19, 2025. Following this, they will grace the Masters of Rock festival in Chile four days later. Unfortunately, due to Oliva’s health conditions, he will not be participating in these shows. Oliva recently disclosed his inability to even sing at the moment due to excruciating pain, requiring time for healing without surgical intervention.
Spring and summer of 2025 will witness Savatage undertaking their first European shows in over two decades. The band is slated to headline several shows and festivals across Europe, including Into the Grave in the Netherlands, Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium, and Rock Fest in Spain. The renowned band is gearing up for a triumphant return to the stage, showcasing their intrinsic musical talents to audiences worldwide.
